What types of funding/scholarships are available for graduate students?

York offers competitive funding packages. York’s Graduate Entrance Scholarships are offered to our top-ranked incoming students. Do I have to take the GRE?

The GRE, or other standardized tests, are not a requirement for admission into our MES program.

I have attended university outside of Canada, can I still apply?

Yes, you can still apply if you have attended university in another country. Please check our International Credential guidelines to ensure that you meet the admission requirements.

Do I need to have an academic background in Environmental Studies to apply to the MES program?

Our program is an interdisciplinary one and explores themes about the natural, built, social, cultural, and political-economic environments and the dynamic relationships between these. In our program, we welcome applicants from all academic backgrounds and experiences.

Can I submit copies of my transcripts?

Applicants may upload scanned copies of transcripts from all the accredited, post-secondary institutions that have been attended for admission consideration. Once admitted into our program, you will need to submit official transcripts in signed and sealed envelopes to the Office of Admissions in order to clear any conditions on the offer of admission.

My transcripts are not in English or French; do I need to have them translated?

Transcripts, certificates and other formal academic credentials not in English or French must be translated by a certified translator.

How are applications reviewed?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. As applications are complete, they will be sent to the Admissions Committee for review.

Can I submit more than 3 reference letters?

No, we require 3 reference letters and cannot accept more than that.

Do I need to have an advisor before I can apply?

In the MES program, an advisor will be assigned to you. Our aim is to match you with a faculty member whose research interests and area of expertise align with your academic interests; however, this is not always possible. Please refer to our faculty profiles.

Can I request my documents back once I submit them?

Materials submitted become the property of the University and cannot be returned.

How will I find out whether I have been offered admission?

Official offers of admission will be sent in the mail. You can also check the status of your application online through MyFile. To access MyFile you will need a student number. This number is included in the email sent to you by the Office of Admissions to acknowledge your application. If you have not received this email, please be patient – it takes up to 4 business days from the date that we receive your application for the acknowledgement email to be sent to you. Please check your Spam or Junk Folder in case the email has ended up there. MyFile will show that we have received your application, your supporting documents and any admission decision that has been made.

What should I do once I receive an offer of admission?

Accept your offer online through MyFile. Further details will be emailed to you with your “Next Steps”.
