Are you serious about making your mark, getting hands-on work experience and learning more about careers in the Ontario Public Service? The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s Central Municipal Services Office is seeking an enthusiastic student who is interested in gaining practical land use planning implementation experience at the provincial level. The student will develop a greater understanding of the Provincial Policy Statement, provincial plans, legislative tools to implement policy, the role of the province in land use planning, the One Window Planning Service, and the appeal body, among other matters. We are seeking a positive team player, who can also work independently.

In this role, you may:

  • Assist in the implementation of provincial land use planning legislation, policies and plans through outreach, education and training initiatives, as well as the review of municipal planning policy documents and other planning/development documents
  • Undertake research, analyze planning issues and prepare reports and other materials to support recommendations in response to various provincial land use priorities and initiatives
  • Research precedents, case studies and emerging trends related to implementing provincial planning policy
  • Organize and participate in educational activities
  •  Prepare public notices, maps and other materials as required
  •  Liaise with other ministries and agencies and respond to stakeholder inquiries


  • Enrolled in a university planning program
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s land use planning system and the role of the Municipal Services Office
  • Familiar with the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement and provincial plans such as the Growth Plan for the
    Greater Golden Horseshoe, the Greenbelt Plan, and the Parkway Belt West Plan
  • Familiar with Planning Act tools, such as Minister’s Zoning Orders and Community Improvement Plans
  • Strong research, analysis and organization skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently
  • Committed to learning and takes initiative
  • Previous planning experience from extracurricular activities or placements
  • Knowledge of GIS is an asset
