Experiential Education

Experiential Education

Enhancing your knowledge through action based learning

Experiential education is one of our specialties in Environmental Studies at York. We recognize hands-on learning as one of the best ways for a student to deeply understand the concepts taught in our courses and we know the added growth and training these opportunities provide for your future.

Professors in the Faculty of Environmental Studies are known for taking their teaching out of the classroom, into different environments, community settings, and habitats. At the same time, we are great at inviting the world into our classrooms, through guest speakers, community-based action projects, or work experiences so you can enrich your learning and enhance your skills.

Through the various experiences, you will learn hands-on skills and grasp current theories to help address challenging environmental questions.

BES Work Placement Program

Within our BES program, students can earn credit and valuable employability skills thought the BES Work Placement course. Each year, our professional network of community partners, friends and alumni look to hire our students for dynamic opportunities.

Research Assistantships

The Research at York (RAY) program was created to enhance both the research culture of the University and the undergraduate student academic experience. Through the RAY program, eligible undergraduate students will have the opportunity to participate in research projects with faculty members and/or fellow students, while receiving compensation at a competitive rate.

Many of our courses will offer field trips and outdoor excursions as part of the course requirements. These field experiences in diverse places, such as local communities, forests, watersheds, across Ontario and to international cities are key learning opportunities.

Outdoor Classrooms

We know that the four walls of a classroom limit potential learning and strive to use our campus and surrounding spaces to enhance your education.

Community Engagement Projects

BES students have the opportunity to engage in on-going and new community projects in the GTA, across a wide variety of fields.
