As a student in the Faculty of Environmental Studies you should know that we want to make it easier for you to navigate your way at York University.
The Student Success Corner is part of the Office of Student and Academic Services (OSAS). The purpose is to assist students in their academic and personal development pursuits. OSAS works closely with other campus associates and colleagues to establish and maintain a welcoming and enthusiastic experience for our students as their progress through their program at York University. In these pages you will find the various support services, initiatives and in-house programs that are available to you to help you succeed while at York.
In the Faculty of Environmental Studies, we want you to feel connected to the university and to the Bachelor in Environmental Studies program. We have designed advising to help you find a sense of purpose so that you can excel academically. Students will be supported through the various initiatives we have in place to foster that success. We hope that you will be engaged as a member of our inclusive learning community. We, the faculty, staff and students in our community welcome you to York University. Advising for new students begins the moment you accept your offer to our program. All new students coming from high school will enroll in YUStart; a program that has been designed to support incoming students.
At Orientation, you will meet your mentors for the academic year as well classmates. You’ll have a chance to hear from your first year professors, the Dean, and the Student Success Coordinator about the resources available on campus to help you on your way to academic success.
What courses will you take in your first year?
In YUStart, you will be provided with a menu of courses to take in your first year. All are required courses, however for two of them, you do have options. The courses that you will take in first year include; ENVS 1000, ENVS 1200, ENVS 1500, a Natural Science Course, and a Humanities Course. For more information visit the academic calendar.
How will the Faculty communicate with you?
Upon beginning your classes in early September, you will be receiving emails from the Faculty of Environmental Studies. Some of these emails will be notices from various speakers that are coming to campus, or special events that are social in nature, and other emails will share information about academic issues. The Student Success Coordinator will also be sending you information that will be important to you as a student. Make sure to look for those in your emails.
Annually, every February, students are invited to attend group advising sessions. These sessions will provide the framework for making informed decisions on the program itself and the various add-ons such as certificate or a double major or minor.
Each Bachelor in Environmental Studies student will submit a checklist to the Student Success Coordinator outlining the various courses that will be taken over the course of the program. The checklist is a tool that outlines what you have taken and what you will take in the future to complete your program. The submission of a checklist unlocks your record so that you are able to enroll for the following year.
New Students from other Universities or Colleges
If you are coming to York University with transfer credits from another institution; either a university or a college, then you will need to book an appointment to meet with the Student Success Coordinator on campus. This meeting will address how many transfer credits you have received, your course assessment breakdown, and what courses you will be enrolling in for the upcoming academic year.

We have designed advising processes to help you understand your program, locate and utilize the support services available, and find a sense of purpose so that you can excel academically. Students can expect to be supported through their program until graduation.

Which courses are required for your Degree?
Each continuing BES student will decide which area of concentration to pursue based on their interests. Every year you will attend a group advising session to learn more about the requirements of your particular area of concentration and how to add certificates, double majors, or minors alongside your degree. If you are having problems deciding which area of concentration to pursue, contact the professors in those respective areas of concentration and your Student Success Coordinator.
On occasion you will receive emails from the Student Success Coordinator about course availability, group advising sessions dates and any changes in policies and procedures. These emails may also provide timely information on dates to add and drop courses, where to find student support services like the university Writing Centre. You may also receive information on the various academic activities run by the Peer Mentors.

Student Counselling and Development aims to help York students realize, develop and fulfill their personal potential in order to maximally benefit from their university experience and manage the challenges of university life. Students come to PCS because of a wide range of concerns including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, abuse, stress, self-esteem, relationship issues, eating and body image as well as issues related to sexuality. The Learning Commons
Students have many resources on campus that will help them succeed. The Learning Commons provides library research support, writing instruction, learning skills and careers services support all under one roof; the Scott Library. The Learning Commons services support students as you develop the many skills, tactics, and strategies required for success in university and beyond. For more information
The Writing Centre contributes to the development of critical thinking, reading and writing. As a result, you will find that if you seek assistance early on the writing of your assignments you will learn more about your own ability to write well and receive guidance during this process. Students in our BES program should take the time to visit the Writing Centre since we do place a heavy emphasis placed on academic writing in our program.

The Peer Mentor program has been designed to help students acclimatize to university life and to our program. We hope to help you become connected to the larger community of York University. Peer Mentors are academically successful and are a positive influence on students by providing support, advice, and encouragement. Some Peer Mentors provide writing and stats tutoring during selected times in the term.
What do they do?
Our well-trained Peer Mentors are available to guide you and to help you over the course of your program. Their office is a wonderful place where you can meet other students in your program. Our Peer Mentors have excellent leadership qualities and excel academically. They will be able to provide you with the friendly support you need to help you navigate university life. The Faculty of Environmental Studies Peer Mentors are available Monday to Friday in HNES 125. Peer Mentors also provide the following:
- Peer Mentors attend first and second year classes to remind students about the various support services available.
- Peer Mentors will invite you to the annual De-Stress Day: a day full of fun, creative crafts, music, movie, popcorn and a place to relax before exams.
- Current Peer Mentors can be available to offer instructional support for some of our ENVS courses, particularly first year courses. If you require some assistance understanding some of the most difficult concepts in a course, the first contact point should be your professor and your own TA. However, you may also seek assistance from a Peer Mentor who is designated as an instructional support mentor. Please contact your Student Success Coordinator for more information.
Supplementary Instructional Support and BES Writing Tutor
For the 2019-2020 Academic Year, a peer mentor will be available to offer instructional support for ENVS 1500 and ENVS 2009. If you require some assistance understanding some of the most difficult concepts in this course, the first contact point should be your professor and your own TA. However, you may also seek assistance from a Peer Mentor who is designated as an instructional support mentor. Please contact your Student Success Coordinator for more information.
For the 2019-2020 Academic Year, a peer mentors will be available to offer academic writing support for ENVS 1000. Students must ensure that the first point of contact for any writing issues should be the professor and your TA. Please contact your Student Success Coordinator for more information on the BES writing tutor hours.
International Student Services
International students receive academic support from the Faculty but may have other questions regarding their student visa, timelines to ensuring all documents are processed in time for classes, orientation for incoming international students and any other immigration questions. Visit Page
International students that require assistance of a writing tutor are able to utilize the ESL Writing Centre. The Centre offers language and academic skills support to English as a Second Language students in our courses. This service is free of charge and you are able to drop in to ask questions or to browse the library during their office hours. Visit Page
